FAQ

How do the Group Sessions work?

A great way to save some money! I only recommend this option for small groups of students who are working on the same subject and ideally with the same teacher.  This way the entire session should be relevant and useful to each student taking part.  The rates are $50/hr per student for 2 students, $40/hr per student for 3 students, $35/hr per student for 4 students, and $30/hr per student for 5 students.  If a session is planned as a group session, but then turns out to be a normal one person session or includes fewer students than planned, we will revert to the appropriate rate.

You can book an available time right here You can also feel free to visit https://app.greminders.com/c/michaelhanson anytime you like.

How do I set up an individual session?

I cover all Basic Math, Pre-algebra, Algebra I & II, Geometry, Trigonometry, Pre-Calculus, and Calculus AB and BC, I can help you prepare for the SAT and ACT, but do not consider myself an expert on standardized tests.  I do not cover AP Statistics.

Which math topics do you cover?

Mostly high school, but I also work with students in their first couple years of college math, junior high school, and occasionally even younger.

What ages do you work with?
How long are your sessions?

The standard sessions are either one hour or half an hour.  However, you can call, email, or text me to arrange sessions of irregular length.  To be completely clear, these time slots work the same way as most hourly services.  Meaning that a 1-hr session means a guaranteed 50 minutes of instruction and half hour session means a guaranteed 25 minutes.  When my schedule allows, I may grant an extra 5-10 minutes.

I do not. Unless you're having trouble in your Theatre Arts class...  in which case, I'd be happy to help!

Do you tutor subjects other than math?
What are your rates?

My 1-on-1 rates is $75/hr and $40/half hour. I offer group rates at $50/hr per student for 2 students, $40/hr per student for 3 students, $35/hr per student for 4 students, and $30/hr per student for 5 students.

Do you have official policies in for scheduling, rescheduling, cancellations, payment, etc?
How do I secure a weekly session time?

Yes to all of the above.  I strive to be fair, flexible, and understanding at all times.  That said, I do have some rules.  They can all be reviewed here.

What are your credentials?

I have none of the credentials that a big tutoring company like Varsity will require of its employees.  I did very well with math in high school, but I went to UCLA for Theatre and didn't do a lick of math while I was there. I had previously worked as a camp counselor for both nature and theatre camps.  I coupled this experience working with kids with my natural aptitude and affinity for math and gave math tutoring a whirl.  That was more than ten years ago.  Since then, I have had a steady stream of students who have found their way to me almost exclusively by way of word-of-mouth recommendations.  To sum up, if you need a tutor with a degree in math or teaching, I'm not your guy.  My credentials, such are they are, come in the form a long list of valued and satisfied clients.  (Client Contact Info available on request)

Where do your sessions take place?

Mostly on Zoom.  I will occasionally see students in person during the summer or earlier in the day if that's possible.  But never during typical after school hours.

Call, e-mail, or text me and we can discuss what's available.  My phone number is (805) 680-6015 and my email address is michaelhansonmt@gmail.com.

Do you tutor during the summer?

Yes indeed!  Unless your student is taking a summer course, I plan on supplying the curriculum itself.  It will be custom designed to address your concerns and objectives.  We can focus on material from last year that needs review, a preview of the material to come, standardized test prep or a combination of any of these.  I plan on using Khan Academy to assign lesson videos, assignments, quizzes and tests.  It's a fantastic resource, and combined with screen sharing via Zoom, I am confident that we can figure out a plan that meets your student's goals within your budget.
